Advent Waiting

Living into a Spirituality of Waiting

CandleWhen we were children, Christmas never seemed to come soon enough.  As adults, all kinds of other things never come soon enough: results of tests, relationships resolving or deepening; cures for diseases, hunger or poverty; world peace.  “For most people,” writes Henri Nouwen, “waiting is an awful desert between where they are and where they want to go.” Advent waiting is different.  It’s an “active waiting” says Nouwen, anticpating with hope and joy the promised peace and love of God unfolding in our lives.  Not a waiting for “the other shoe to drop” but for the flower to bloom– confident that it will, ready to be surprised by its radiance.  Although Advent is the season we try to live into a hopeful waiting, active waiting is a part of Christian spiritual life all year round, in every season of our lives. You may want to check out this blog post reflecting on Nouwen’s “active waiting”.
