Christmas Candles

A Poem/Prayer by Howard Thurman:

I will light candles this Christmas Candles of joy despite all sadness,

Candles of hope where despair keeps watch,

Candles of courage where fear is ever present,

Candles of peace of tempest-tossed days,

Candles of grace to ease heavy burdens,

Candles of love to inspire all my living,

Candles that will burn all the year long.

Dr. Howard Thurman, the grandson of slaves, was a poet, author, pastor, educator and civil rights leader.  He was deeply influenced by Quaker mysticism.  One of our favorite Christmas hymns, “When the song of the angels is stilled…the work of Christmas begins,” is based on a poem by Thurman.  Read more about Howard Thurman here.
