Generosity as Spiritual Discipline

generosityIt’s stewardship season again.  In lots of churches, folks are being asked to reflect on their gifts, their gratitude and God’s grace, and consider making a financial giving commitment for the coming year.  On the one hand, we do this because on a practical level, we need to plan a church budget.  But generations of Christians before us teach us that giving is not just some duty to an institution (like dues we pay), but that our financial giving is a spiritual discipline.  Kathryn Matthews Huey, in a personal reflection writes: “Generosity, I have come to understand, is a discipline to be practiced and yet, mysteriously, at the same time, it frees our spirit.”  Read more of Huey’s story here.
