The Roller Coaster of Change

Understanding the Emotions

Many of us are in seasons of personal change.  Some are positive changes, like the birth of a child, or starting a new job.  Others are less welcomed, like a diagnosis of cancer or a divorce. Our church is in a time of changes.  [A sentence or two here about the changes being experienced.] All changes, welcomed or not, evoke a variety of emotions.  “The Roller Coaster of Change” is a model that identifies a natural sequence of emotional responses in response to change.  The roller coaster moves from mourning and disorientation, through depression and detachment, to problem-solving, finding new purpose and excitement.  This model can help us identify our own feelings, but also recognize how others might be responding differently. Read the article “The Roller Coaster of Change,” by Gil Rendle to explore this model.
